Traditionally held every first Monday of May, this year’s Met Gala put a different spin on the much-anticipated fashion event by having a show in the middle of September due to COVID-19.
Met Gala, also known as the Oscars of the fashion world, happens to be one of the most anticipated annual events in the world. Spearheaded by Vogue and several New York-based organizations, it’s a yearly gathering that brings together the most prominent names in fashion, film, music, and the arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Dressed in the most fashion-forward and most provocative ensembles, celebrities of the moment preen and air kiss before the cameras while stomping the red carpet, this year in beige, earning for the event another fitting moniker: the Oscars of the East Coast.
Underneath all that glamour and glitter, though, the main objective of organizers is to encourage donations, primarily for the Met’s upkeep, from members of New York’s high society. The benefit has different themes every year, depending on the museum’s latest exhibition.
This year, the exhibition’s theme is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” which aims to celebrate all forms of American fashion. The annual exhibit will be presented in two parts: “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and “In America: An Anthology of Fashion. This year’s co-chairs are Timothee Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka.
