5 Creative Ways to Cook Tikoy

Tikoy is the ultimate Chinese New Year staple. The sticky texture and subtly sweet taste that lend themselves well to both sweet and savory dishes are sure to make your mouth water no matter how it’s prepared.

If you’re unsure about how to prepare it or if you just want new options, here are a few of our favorite ways to enjoy tikoy:

1. Buttered Tikoy

If eating it sweet isn’t what you’re in the mood for, sauté your tikoy strips in butter and salt for a completely different experience. Simple yet effective!

2. Turon Tikoy

Wrap your tikoy strips in lumpia wrappers and deep fry them for a flaky, crunchy exterior and a chewy center. You can even add a Pinoy touch with a sliver of langka — or maybe even cheese — to give the sweet treat a salty edge.

3. Tikoy Buchi

To start off making your tikoy buchi, create tikoy balls with a melon baller. Or if you don’t want to go through the trouble of scooping out the tikoy one at a time, you can create tikoy cubes instead. Then, roll the tikoy segments of your choice into sesame seeds or any crushed nuts or seeds you prefer. Lastly, deep fry them for easy bite-sized chunks of yum!

4. Egg-dipped Tikoy

This recipe is as easy as it sounds. First, slice your tikoy into strips. Next, scramble some eggs with a splash of milk. Then, dip your tikoy strips into the eggs and fry in a pan. And voila! You get a nice crispy egg coating and a nice gooey tikoy center.

5. Tikoy ala Mode

Last but certainly not least, take your egg-dipped tikoy and top it with your favorite ice cream while it’s still warm! That’s all it takes to make the traditional tikoy preparation a little more special.
