With the arrival of 2021’s Year of the Metal Ox, CHiNOY TV has put together its inaugural CHY List, which aims to annually celebrate the achievements of 10 Chinoys who have all accomplished great things, inspired others, and made significant contributions to their respective fields and beyond.

We will also be releasing individual features to highlight the accomplishments of each of this year’s CHY List honorees. Today, we turn the spotlight on successful businessman and philanthropist Ramon Ang.

From beer brewery to food manufacturing, San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has expanded to power and energy, infrastructure, oil refining, and real estate — all in approximately 10 years. The man behind it all? Ramon Ang. He’s not only a savvy businessman, but he’s also an admirable philanthropist.

One would think that someone who expanded a business so quickly would be extremely business-minded, but Ang also has the community in mind. He prioritizes the needs of the country and the people, making sure that San Miguel prioritizes projects that will help make Filipinos’ lives easier and make the country better as a whole — whether it creates jobs, promotes tourism, facilitates trade, or betters the country’s economy.

Philanthropic acts

His dedication to the Filipino people was also evident when he increased SMC’s production of 70% ethyl alcohol by 100,000 liters per day in an effort to help with COVID-19 efforts in March 2020.

In a nationwide quarterly campaign with the Philippine Red Cross, Ang also donated blood to encourage his employees to join in the company’s massive blood and convalescent plasma donation drive. The initiative was launched by SMC in order to help COVID-19 patients heal faster.

Another one of the many ways Ang gives back to the community is by buying excess milk from farmers and sending them to food banks and communities to support local farmers and help address the food shortage.

Better World Diliman, one of Ang’s efforts to raise up his fellow countrymen, has helped 4,500 farmers sell more than half a million kilos of excess produce, increasing the farmers’ income. Some of the excess products from the market also go to the Better World Tondo food bank and learning hub.

In addition, SMC partnered with the Department of Agriculture to open “Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita” stores at Petron gas stations to help create more job opportunities for the farmers to sell their goods.

Ang does not only aim to help Filipinos but the animals, as well. SMC partners with Animal Kingdom Foundation which nurses stray animals back to full health.

Building a better country

Moreover, SMC has many ongoing infrastructure projects under government programs. Traffic is one of the biggest contributors to the country’s economic loss, and the MMS Stage 3 project aims to help ease road congestion.

The elevated expressway runs from Buendia, Makati to the North Luzon Expressway in Balintawak, Quezon City, connecting the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and North Luzon Expressway (NLEX). It’s estimated that 50% of the congestion along EDSA has been alleviated. The expressway also may spur economic growth in Valenzuela, making the city more accessible to the rest of the NCR.

Furthermore, Ang simultaneously runs multiple companies cross various fields as President and/or Chief Executive Officer, including Top Frontier Investment Holdings Inc., Petron Corporation,  Ginebra San Miguel, Inc., and more. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of  Eagle Cement Corporation and Chairman of the Board for San Miguel Foods, Inc., Anchor Insurance Brokerage Corporation, and Philippine Diamond Hotel & Resort, Inc., among many others.

Recently, Ang was also the recipient of the Lifetime Contributor Award at the Asia CEO Awards 2020 for his COVID-19 response. He pioneered an outreach program that contributed 13.180 billion pesos to aid  disadvantaged communities, government sectors, and medical frontliners.

Ang has also appeared in several international “power lists,” such as Wall Street Journal Asia. Previously, Ang was also a part of the 2019 Bloomberg 50 list that commends leaders in business, politics, entertainment, finance, fashion, and science and technology, making him the first Filipino to achieve this. He was also no. 8 in the Philippines 50 Richest of 2020 as listed by Forbes.

Ramon Ang is one of the country’s best in the industry, and he is proof that great leaders lead by example.
