Episode 10: Goal-Setting and Self-Awareness with Darlyn Ty-Nilo

In order to succeed in life, it’s important to be self-aware and set your goals. For this Rise Up with Janeena Chan podcast episode, Belle de Jour Power Planner president Darlyn Ty-Nilo shares her inspiring entrepreneurial journey of self-awareness, fulfillment, and success.

Remain open to the unexpected.

As an entrepreneur and as someone who has to produce planners for the next year months in advance, Nilo tries to have some foresight to predict the trends and stay relevant. Thankfully, even with the pandemic, she was still able to do so by grounding her products’ designs and themes in meaningful things that people can relate to and are interested in. Work wise, at the beginning of the pandemic, she also had to be open to a work-from-home set-up for her team, even though she never tried it before. And to this day, like most offices, it’s still how they operate. In business, sometimes, it’s necessary to try and forecast the future, but also staying open to the unexpected can do wonders for your brand and for your life.

You have to reevaluate where you’re headed.

This pandemic has given us an opportunity to pause and reflect, and Nilo advised to make use of that time to re-examine our current state with the plans we want to achieve even under these circumstances. Taken from the president of Belle de Jour Power Planner herself, it’s important to re-align yourself with your goals to avoid getting lost in the process. It’s important to ask yourself, “Where do you want to be? Where do you want to go?” Nilo shared that those questions have become a constant reminder to them as they design the planners, knowing that they can help remind others to connect with themselves, too.

Make daily self-check ins.

Whenever you’re faced with making a decision that has long-term effects, you must remember to always ask yourself, “Is this really what I want? How do I feel about this?” and only then will you determine what you want for yourself. Nilo shared that asking yourself these questions will help you understand your emotions better. Also, your goals have to reflect your own desires. Self-sabotage or merely sacrificing what you want to do just for the sake of pleasing others or a wider market won’t benefit you or leave you fulfilled in the long run. When you do daily check-ins, you will eventually see patterns. This will help you learn more about yourself and in turn, face even more difficult decisions ahead.

Don’t let fear get in the way of you achieving your dreams.

Nilo noticed that right after people are able to decide on their goals, they often put them on hold because of their lack of confidence and fear of failure. It’s normal to feel fear so there’s no need to be hard on yourself. But she shared that fear becomes a barrier to achieving the success that may await you just around the corner. To help kill self-doubt, Nilo shared that it’s best to keep telling yourself that “you are a work in progress.”

Take one opportunity at a time.

Success doesn’t happen overnight, but it shouldn’t be rushed for the sake of it either. In the pursuit of your goals, you have to remember to be patient and take your time. Rushing it would only overwhelm you. If you focus on achieving one goal at a time, this will almost certainly guarantee a good outcome. Nilo advised that people should learn how to prioritize. And try to reflect on each opportunity that comes your way so that you can examine if it works for you.
