Eyeliner 101: How to apply eyeliner for bigger and bolder eyes

For most women, eyeliner is not the most effortless makeup to apply. For one, you have to be very careful so as not to go overboard with the thickness of your application, and two, the line should be as even as possible for both eyes. It’s a challenge many women go through. But once you get the hang of it—once you master your eyeliner routine—it can make your eyes look bigger and more awake, especially for those with naturally-born “singkit” or slanted eyes who want to try other eye looks from time to time.

In this article, a beauty guru shares her tips and tricks into killing the eyeliner game within five minutes or less! We also rounded up some user-friendly eyeliner products you can try, which are all available on our shores.

Elva Ni is a Chinese YouTube vlogger, model, and yoga instructor who believes that positioning a mirror below our chin level when applying eyeliner is always helpful. In that way, when you look down the mirror, it will guide us better on where to draw the line in the spot between the eyelashes and eyelid. She advises you to start in the middle of the eyes and get comfortable with the eyeliner first before drawing.

“One of the benefits of starting in the middle is it’s going to be okay if you made a mistake and drew a thick line since thickening in the middle can make your eyes look bigger and more round,” Elva shares in one of her eyeliner tutorials on YouTube.

For beginners who are just starting to learn the hoops of wearing eyeliner, Elva advises stopping the line at the end of your eyelashes. Through this technique, your eyes will look more natural but better.

On the other hand, if you’re feeling extra and you want to look more awake, you can extend the eyeliner a little bit upwards at the end of your lashes to make an illusion of bigger eyes.

Meanwhile, Elva advises drawing an eyeliner downwards at the end of your eyelashes for those looking for a gentler eyeliner look. By doing so, your eyes will give off an easy glam.

“The most important advice when putting on eyeliner is to practice. You can only draw a perfect eyeliner from continuously practicing,” the beauty guru concludes.
