THIS JUST IN: To further expand its drugstore business in the Philippines, the Gokongwei-led Robinsons Retail Holdings (RRHI) has opened its 870th Rose Pharmacy, after fully acquiring its parent company, one of the leading drugstore chains in Visayas and Mindanao, in 2020.
In 1952, the Lim family established Rose Pharmacy before Dairy Farm International fully acquired it in 2018. Now, RRHI’s subsidiary Southstar Drug Store has acquired 100 percent of Rose Pharmacy, a top-of-mind drugstore with nearly P9 billion in net sales in 2019.
Now in the hands of the Gokongwei group, Rose Pharmacy shows no signs of slowing down as it has recently opened the 870th drugstore in Lapu Lapu City in Cebu to address the country’s need for primary healthcare, especially during a pandemic.
“Since our acquisition of Rose Pharmacy in 2020, we have seen various possibilities in further shaping our drugstore portfolio to address current and relevant customer needs. Health is always important to everyone but even more so now that we are in a pandemic,” Robinsons Retail Holdings president and CEO Robina Gokongwei-Pe says in a press statement.
Before Rose Pharmacy, the Gokongweis also owned Southstar Drug and The Generics Pharmacy, with over 2000 franchise stores nationwide.
“I am delighted that Rose Pharmacy will be part of our portfolio as it takes us back to our hometown in Cebu, where my father and JG Summit Holdings and RRHI Founder John Gokongwei, Jr. started as an entrepreneur. Mr. John also admired Rose Pharmacy for its strong brand reputation in Visayas and Mindanao,” Robina adds.
With the acquisition of Rose Pharmacy, Gokongweis’ position in the drugstore industry strengthens as Southstar Drug Store and The Generics Pharmacy remain to be of good standing in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.
Aside from its physical stores, Rose Pharmacy also operates its e-commerce website to adapt to digital times.
