Love and Relationship Compatibility According to Your Chinese Zodiac

A new lunar year has started, so it’s prime time for you to get your platonic and romantic relationships in order!

In Chinese culture, it is common practice to match up each other’s zodiac signs to check for compatibility, especially for relationships entering marriage. The degree of compatibility is usually determined by various groupings of the zodiac signs such as the Three Harmonies, Six Harmonies, Six Conflicts, and Six Damages.

Of course, the outcome of your relationships can’t be completely determined by zodiac signs alone, so be sure to take this with a grain of salt! But for all those needing help in looking for potential partners, here’s a fun way to check who you are most and least compatible with!

To start, if you’re unsure of which zodiac sign you possess, check your birth year here:

Rat: 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020

The Three Harmonies (三合)

The Three Harmonies are 12 zodiac animals divided into four groups of three. Each group of three contains the zodiacs that tend to be the most like-minded, which makes for easy mutual understanding and harmonious relationships. For those looking for romance, we recommend that you look at partners whose zodiac signs fall in the same Three Harmonies group as your own:

  • Rat, Dragon, Monkey
  • Ox, Snake, Rooster
  • Tiger, Horse, Dog
  • Rabbit, Goat, Pig

Quick Tip: If you can’t remember which animals you are most compatible with, just check for birth years that are 4 or 8 years apart from yours!

The Six Harmonies (六合)

The Six Harmonies, also known as the “Secret Benefactors,” are the six pairs of zodiac signs who each have a supportive relationship with the other. Although they are not as compatible as signs grouped in the Three Harmonies, the pairs are likely to provide each other with great help and easy friendships, making for trustworthy companions and colleagues.

  • Rat & Ox
  • Tiger & Pig
  • Rabbit & Dog
  • Dragon & Rooster
  • Snake & Monkey
  • Horse & Goat

The Six Conflicts (六冲)

The Six Conflicts, like the Six Harmonies, are also zodiac animals grouped into pairs. However, instead of having a harmonious relationship, these pairs are likely to experience conflict and contradictions. That said, this doesn’t mean that a Six Conflicts pair won’t be interested in each other. On the contrary, the more conflicting their differences are, the more likely they are to get together. Simply said, opposites attract!

Unfortunately, it is usually said that no matter how great the attraction, these relationships will undergo intense turmoil. Eventually, these types of pairs are expected to break up.

  • Rat & Horse
  • Ox & Goat
  • Tiger & Monkey
  • Rabbit & Rooster
  • Dragon & Dog
  • Snake & Pig

The Six Damages (六害)

The Six Conflicts may have conflicting personalities, but pairs belonging to the Six Damages will never see eye to eye! If zodiacs in these pairs ever enter a relationship with each other, they are likely to damage each other’s luck and cause great harm to each other.

  • Rat & Goat
  • Ox & Horse
  • Tiger & Snake
  • Rabbit & Dragon
  • Monkey & Pig
  • Rooster & Dog

At the end of the day, zodiac signs are just one way to assess the compatibility of your relationships and should probably be taken half-seriously. But if you’re interested in more zodiac-related content and fortune, be sure to check our article on your lucky zodiac colors, too!
