We already published a list of Chinese scientists who are changing the world. However given the sheer number of them, we had to follow-up with this list. Quick fact: it is recorded that China has already surpassed the US in the number of science publications.
So here are some of the most well known Chinese scientists who really made an impact in the medical field:
1. Zhengli Shi
She is known as China’s “Bat Woman” since her discovery is how coronavirus is transmitted from bats to humans. Back in 2002-2003, Shi and her team were the ones who found that the SARS coronavirus originated from bats.
2. Vivian Wing-Wah Yam
Yam is a Hongkong chemist who focuses her research on organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). Back when she was a child, she was already intrigued by mercury flowing from a broken thermometer, which later on gave her the idea of becoming a scientist. She was one of the youngest scientists to receive the L’Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science back in 2011.
3. Gloria Lim
Singaporean Lim is known as the queen of fungi. She is now retired, but in the span of her career, she has published 140 research papers, wrote several books on fungi, and consulted for private companies and public sectors. Her research shone a light to the neglected field of mycology.
4. David T. Wong
Wong is a neuroscientist who discovered the antidepressant drug fluoxetine, better known as Prozac. He pursued the study of monoamine compounds, which later on led to the discovery of fluoxetine. This compound is now being used to treat patients suffering from depression the world over.
5. Min Chueh Chang
Chang is a Chinese-American biologist who invented “The Pill.” He studied fertilization in mammalian reproduction, and also investigated sperm development, and performed in vitro fertilization. From this comprehensive research, the oral contraceptive pill was formed.
