Just three days into her three-week stay in Malaysia for the pageant, she fell down the stairs during one of the rehearsals and sprained her right ankle. “I was in a wheelchair for days and had to rely on crewmembers to bring me to places,” she recalled. The doctor warned her against wearing high heels indefinitely, which was a devastating blow: “This crushed my heart. For how can a beauty queen be a beauty queen without high heels?”

Amidst this period of difficulty, Carrie Lee, the Malaysian lady and organizer behind the pageant, encouraged her by saying, “Frances, if it is God’s will, you’ll be able to walk, and you’ll win this. It is all up to Him.” Her words provided a glimmer of hope in the midst of what felt like a hopeless situation. “As my ankle slowly healed, I was able to join fashion shows while wearing flat shoes,” Frances shared. Although she couldn’t join all the activities and workshops, she spent a lot of time reflecting and praying, realizing that “during the times when I am weak, that’s when He is strong.”

Through perseverance, Frances was not only able to perform her talent but was also chosen as one of the contestants to perform during the Final Night. “I used to think that a beauty queen is not a beauty queen without her high heels. Now, I realized that a real beauty queen is someone who has a real heart, someone who has faith,” she concluded.
