Episode Overview

There are many terms that Chinese-Filipinos often use to pertain to themselves. While “Chinese-Filipino” and “Chinoy” are more often heard in mainstream media and conversations, there is another term that is mostly only used within the Chinese community.

Lannang, a word from the Hokkien dialect, is usually heard amongst the members of the community when they are using their spoken language, Lannang-ue, and in the efforts to preserve Lannang heritage, the nonprofit organization The Lannang Archives was created. The season’s theme of identity building and cultural preservation is given more depth by this episode’s discussions on the origins of the Lannang people as an ethnolinguistic group and the unique emergence of the Lannang-ue tongue.
