Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach Interviews “Candidates” Seeking To Join Online ESL Platform 51Talk

In this time of COVID-19 where non-essentials are not being prioritized, it can be hard for people in those fields to find other ways to earn. That’s why 51Talk is offering several Filipinos the opportunity to earn a living by becoming teachers to thousands of foreign students abroad – and what better way than to recruit Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach to help out!

51Talk recently held its first live stream interview conducted by Wurtzbach, 51Talk’s new Brand Ambassador, and co-hosted by Patricia Reyes and teacher Angelo Lex for qualified candidates who would want to join the 30,000 home-based online teaching opportunities given by the platform. Over 70,000 viewers tuned in for the live stream, and among the hundreds who signed up, nine lucky aspiring teachers managed to snag the interview with the beauty queen!

The entertaining, inspiring, and heartwarming live stream served as a way for the viewers to learn more about 51Talk’s teach-at-home status and its quick, three-day application process. The nine candidates also shared their stories about how 51Talk’s opportunity lifted their spirits in light of losing work during the pandemic, such as dance instructor Paula who wanted to translate her experience in lecturing to helping students learn English, as well as events host Trina, who entertained the crowd in performing songs in English and in Chinese. Lex shared that as a 51Talk teacher, he gets to earn at the comfort of his home and to teach several studetns while adjusting to his own schedule.

One candidate that caught the eye of the crowd was flight attendant Pearl, who was supposed to go on re-training after returning from her maternity leave before her work was put on hold. With a new child in the family, times were hard for Pearl, who felt 51Talk’s offer was a chance for her to relive her childhood dream of being an educator. “I even resorted to borrowing my sister’s laptop since it’s one of the requirements [for teaching], and I can’t afford to buy one now,” she admitted. Moved by her story, Wurtzbach decided to personally donate a laptop to her so she can start her teaching journey, which surprised everyone and even moved Pearl to tears. “We see your hard work and we’re very sorry for what you’re going through as a young mom. I find you very engaging and who has so much potential,” said Wurtzbach.

As an experienced teacher with 51Talk, Lex also shared his excitement when he learned of the platform’s recent announcement about the 20 million pesos incentive program exclusively for 51Talk teachers this month.

With empowering Filipinos as her primary advocacy, Wurtzbach was clearly moved by the experience of helping people find stable work amidst the pandemic as a new brand ambassador for 51Talk. On the inspiring experience of interviewing candidates online, Wurtzbach shared, “It’s a humbling experience to interview such incredible candidates from all walks of life, to hear their unique stories, and to witness how talented and passionate they all are.”

“It’s such an honor to represent 51Talk as their brand ambassador and to be able to connect to thousands of Filipinos through this live stream. I hope it inspired them and gave them joy,” concluded Wurtzbach, who encouraged viewers to tune in to 51Talk’s next live stream.

Listed in the New York Stock Exchange, 51Talk is the leading online English education platform that connects thousands of Filipino teachers to foreign students who want to learn English through online, interactive classrooms.
