Dining Out…At Home? Make It Happen With These 5 Home Cooks

With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting livelihoods of all walks of life, CHiNOY TV kickstarted the #CHiNOYTVSupportsLocal series to give an avenue for local businesses to be featured!

Today’s entry is for those who miss the days where you could choose anything from a restaurant’s menu! These homemade meals-to-go are perfect for those who want a taste of everything.

JUST JAR

Founder Christopher Yu started Just Jar by selling cheesecakes in a jar last year during the “Ber” months to cater to friends who were looking for Christmas giveaways. After a few months, however, he stopped because he became occupied with work. He decided to resume operations in April to have a source of income during the pandemic. Yu expanded the menu to provide more than just desserts. “We offer you a complete meal. Shrimp salad for starter, Baked beef kimchi rice for the main course, creampuffs for dessert, and freshly brewed fruit tea for drinks!” he described. He also wanted to help his colleagues during this difficult time to have an extra income, so they became Just Jar’s delivery riders and resellers.

Just Jar prides itself on its full-course meal: the Baked Beef Kimchi Rice (UL), Brewed Fruit Tea (UR), Shrimp Salad (LL), and Cream Puffs (LR).

WHAT TO TRY: Just Jar’s full-course meal starts with their Shrimp Salad, with lightly battered shrimp and tropical fruits tossed in a sweet and creamy dressing. Next up is the Baked Beef Kimchi Rice, which satisfies all your samgyup cravings with layers of kimchi rice, beef bulgogi, cheese, and special sauce baked till golden, then topped with sesame seeds and nori strips. For dessert, Yu recommends the Cream Puffs – pillowy choux pastries that are generously filled with cream custard then drizzled with dark chocolate. Alongside the meal, they also have freshly Brewed Fruit Tea that is refreshing and comes with crystal jelly and popping boba.

AUNTY NORZ’ HOME COOKING

Co-owner Xergg shares that he always enjoyed his mom’s signature dishes and the happiness that it brings. He and his siblings thought, “Why not let other people share the experience with us at the comforts of their own homes?” This led to Aunty Norz’ Home Cooking, where they showcase their home-cooked favorites by bringing it from their kitchen to yours.

Aunty Norz’s diverse selection of food includes their Spicy Kani Aburi (UL), Truffle Cheese Sticks (LL), Ox Tail / Gu Be (C), Burger (UR), and Pork Longganisa (LR).

WHAT TO TRY: Their take on the classic Pork Longganisa has a perfect blend of sweet, garlicky, and saltiness in one roll of joy. They plan to elevate your cheese stick experience with their unique Truffle Cheese Sticks. Aunty Norz’ personal Burger Patties recipe is tried and tested; they’re juicy and tender with a surprising kick of flavor from mushrooms. The Spicy Kani Aburi is their take on the Baked Sushi craze. Keeping it in the family, their late grandfather’s rendition of the classic adobo is their Ox Tail / Gu Be dish, with a bit of spice and is best eaten with rice.
